CORFU in August 2021

After the beautiful and interesting days in Thessaloniki, we are already looking forward to the beach holiday in Corfu. With our car we take the highway from Thessaloniki to Igoumenitsa and then continue with the car ferry from Igoumenitsa to Lefkimi, on the southern part of the island of Corfu.

From Lefkimi it is only a few kilometers to the village of Marathias and then down to Marathias Beach, where we have reserved an apartment with Janis Nikomanis. Janis's house is located in a quiet area just a few steps from the beach. He and his three brothers have apartments of various sizes, all with a kitchen / kitchenette, bathroom, bedroom and air conditioning, as well as a balcony. Parking spaces are also available in front of the property.

We have been to Corfu for Holidays very often, especially the beautiful beaches for swimming have done to us. Of course, as an island, Corfu has a lot more to offer, but after the many vacations and the many tours that have already taken us through the island, we have become calmer and lazy. A good breakfast on the balcony, a sunny day on the beach with swimming and lazing around as well as a good dinner in a cozy tavern are a perfect day for us.

Of course we know the village of Argirades from our breakfast shopping. What has remained hidden from us so far, however, is the "old Village of Argirades" with the church of Agios Joannis on a hill. The walk through the village is a glimpse into the past and from the hill with the church you have a wonderful all-round view.

Corfu and olive oil is like the sea and the beach. The whole island is covered with old olive trees, some are hundred years old or more! These old olive trees also make the drive through the island so delightful. From olive trees to olive oil is a long and busy road. The particularly high quality of the olive oil from Corfu is proven by the many awards it has received in international comparative tests. The Mavroudis Corfu Family Olive-Oil manufactory documents this impressively with the issued quality certificates and international awards.

For the return journey to Austria, we book the car ferry from Corfu to Italy / Bari through an office in Corfu Town (Kerkyra). We combine this booking with a stroll through the city, explore the small alleys again, eat the typical Greek small meat skewers in a small restaurant and drink Greek beer with it. In the late afternoon we sit down for a coffee in the arcades of the esplanade and watch the colorful mix of island vacationers, cruise ship guests and locals.

A vacation in Corfu is a wonderful alternative to stressful trips to distant countries!
